MY PROFESSIONAL PHILISOPHY

I always like to keep me engaged in tasks. Especially in my learning process and  profession. So, immediately after finishing my first degree, I started to work as a Science teacher at Lead The Way International School Dehiwala.

I got an opportunity to work as a Chemistry and Zoology demonstrator in my university faculty of science. Sadly, considering the transport and other personal commitments I had to deny that offer. Anyway, I considered to do my teaching profession as part time and I wished to improve my skills in different scientific sectors

"Begin somewhere. You cannot build a reputation on what you intend to do."

Unfortunately, my admission to new jobs were denied by some companies as I was a fresh graduate and I lack field experiences at the beginning. People with high experiences were considered as first preference by many companies. Meanwhile, some recruit fresher right from campus because they think such candidates will be innovative, creative, can understand quickly and deliver.

I love science because it is a different subject from everything else. As our understanding of life, the universe and everything deepens we realise that there is even more we don't understand. That unlimite potential is exciting that's why I find science so amazing.

I started teaching secondary school students at Lead The Way International without any prior experiences of teaching. Also have been a class teacher for grade 9 students. When time goes I realized my unique style of teaching, and this student-centered teaching method encouraged by  students as well as others.

In my opinion, overall elements such as minimal distractions, a clear routine, a positive atmosphere and varied approaches and formats of teaching have been proven to improve performance and facilitate effective learning. So, I always make sure that the learning environment is perfect and transparent before starting my lectures. And I start my lectures with questioning the students or I try to grab the attention with an subject related element or an object before moving in to the lesson. And then, keep them on track until I make sure each and every child has grab the concept which I taught them on that day.

Understanding my real potential, made teaching as my passion, as it reveals my inner desire to help others, to impart my knowledge to them, and to sail in other people's minds the minds of others. There is actually a preconceived notion or a stereotype attached that to "teaching" is seen as being "easy work". It is not easy at all.

I started my teaching career at Zahira College Colombo in 2020, month of August. Zahira College is the largest Muslim educational institution in Sri Lanka with more than 5000 students and 400 teachers.  Working at Zahira is a new experience for me. It honed and polishes my skills of teaching more and more. Unlike my previous school, students capacity of the college is high. College work with all three medium, whereas, I worked at English Junior Section which consists of Englsih medium Grade 6, 7 and 8s. Thus, each classes carries around 30 to 40 students.

I work as a class tecaher as well as science teacher in the college. Though, i was able to manage my class room and to complete related tasks without prior experiences, here teachers were trained and guided to manage classes successfully. Thus, I got an opportunity to enhance my practical knowledge here.

Classroom management is an important skill that every teacher should possess. Student achievement greatly depends on the knowledge acquired in the classroom. With the right approach, teachers can positively influence student behavior, thus facilitating children’s learning process and personal development. By using classroom management strategies, it is possible to get the most out of one’s students and help them to become successful and well educated adults.

During this period, teachers had to handle several tasks simultaneously, along with academics, being proficient in technical as well as technological knowledge add more value to our profession. My background knowledge in Information Communication technology enable me to adapt to all kind of situations and also to finish given tasks on time.

An unexpected turn over in school education is pandemic caused by corana virus. Where the schools were closed for long term and where education shifted to virtual mode. I was a quick adaptor and a fast learner during this period also, was able to conduct smooth virtual learning, to handle virtual documentations and other tasks. Unlike physical school days, one of the pros which benefited me is, I was able to display real practical videos and animations. Thus, that gives more clarification than writing on the board.

I was also assigned to teach Health and Physical Education and Practical and Teachnical Skills subjects in the school. Anyway, I could able to handle it with high pass rates.

Throughout my career, I have followed the philosophy of motivating and developing an urge of learning amongst my students. I believe in practicality of what is taught to the students. So I try my level best, with the resources at my exposure, to include all possible practical examples in my teachings. I have a strong passion to enlighten the young minds, who are going to be the future architects of our nation and of the world. I believe that the dream of a peaceful society can be best achieved by inculcating right values in our adults at the university level, so that when they enter the undergraduate program they are equipped with pearls of wisdom that will guide them at every cross roads. I ensure that every student is involved in the discussions that I engage in my class sessions, so as to increase the teacher student interaction. I firmly believe that every student is unique and has some potential that can be evolved and improved with efforts of the teachers.

Teaching is my passion. I teach because, for me, it's the most effective and most enjoyable way to change the world. That's the bottom line: We need to change this world, and this is the way I'm choosing to do it. Teaching allows me to work on hearts and minds, to guide people in becoming empowered, literate, engaged, creative, liberated human beings who want to join in this effort to change the world. I've seen it happen. I always believed that my students could transform and find themselves, in addition to becoming literate people and graduating from university, but now I'm witnessing it. Every student have the power do the impossible but they need time and help from us as teachers. I always knew they could do it, and now they're doing it.

Knowledge is of no value unless,

you put it into practice.
